All horseplay aside, Gramps’ song, “Old Man of the Sea” off the “Rogue’s” compilation (which is hit and miss, but does include memorable entries from Nick Cave, Lucinda Williams and Bryan Ferry), features some of his finest singing, as well as a dizzying interplay between his noggin and dobro, and the other guitar player. I haven’t been able to verify, but my guess is members of Akron/Family — who performed a different song off “Rogue’s” with Gramps on “Late Night with David Letterman” — sat in on this session.
